Details

The Thomas Wiley® Mini-Mill is our smallest cutting mill - but still Wiley® tough
  • Official Methods of Analysis AOAC 922
  • 1.6 inch diameter milling chamber - 1.7 cu. in.
  • 1 to 25 gram sample volume
  • Three speeds - 860, 1,700 and 3,700 rpm
  • All steel construction
  • Removable safety glass plate permits viewing of sample during milling and allows easy access to interior for cleaning
  • As suggested by the U.S. Bureau of Plant Industry for milling of samples

The Thomas Wiley® Mini-Mill features a polished chamber, 40 mm diameter x 22 mm deep; two stationary blades; and a rotor with four cutting edges that revolve at high speed to produce a shearing action which minimizes loss of moisture from heat. This cutting mill produces a 20-gram, 40-mesh sample of dried plant stem tissue in 15 to 20 minutes; a similar sample of extracted leaf tissue in 7 to 10 minutes; or 13 mm pieces of soybean stems in 5 to 7 minutes. Dried samples are generally used, but tobacco with 12% moisture has been milled satisfactorily.

Samples introduced through the hopper are swept around by the rotor until cut to sufficient fineness to pass through sieve top of delivery tube which forms the bottom of the chamber. Six interchangeable delivery tubes of varying mesh are available. The 80 mesh size lacks ruggedness for general use but has been found convenient for plant tissue which has first passed the coarser screens.

The Thomas Wiley® Mini-Mill Cutting Mills were originally designed for grinding fertilizer materials, animal hair, hoofs, etc. The hard, tool steel cutting edges on the knives allow milling of a wider range of materials, including plastics, animal feed, bones, cables, cardboard, electronic scrap, feed pellets, foils, food, leather, material mixtures, non-ferrous metals, paper, pharmaceutical products, refuse derived fuels, rubber, waste, wood and so much more.

Speeds of approximately 860, 1,700 and 3,700 rpm are available by changing the pulley position of belt. A screw top jar can be attached to the lower end of the delivery tube by means of an adapter. Samples can be stored in the same jar. Small samples are collected in a receiver 22 mm square x 19 mm deep.
